Care Sheet - Chinese Elm

Ulmus parvifolia

Submitted by: Adam Counts

Common Name(s):

Chinese Elm

Sun:

Outside- full sun-part shade. Inside-bright location

Temperature:

Shelter from long rain periods, and strong winds. In winter tempatures below 10 degrees can cause fine shoots to die back.

Watering:

Water when the surface is almost dry. Elms are more thirsty in early spring and early summer.

Training:

Chinese Elm's have brittle branches, so wiring can easily bite the bark, and the branches easily break. Directional pruning is the best way to train.

Fertilizing:

Feed a well balanced food while the tree is growing. Rapeseed works real well.

Repotting:

Every one to two years. The roots are easily damaged so watch out.

Propagation:

Cuttings-hard or soft,seeds

Pests/Diseases:

Relatively pest free.

Additional Comments:

A great tree for the beginer.
